Obituary

Richard Avon Mabe of Point Pleasant, WV, formerly of West Hamlin, WV, departed this life on October 31, 2020. Born June 19, 1939 in Hamlin, WV, he graduated from Guyan Valley High School in 1957 where he was a member of the football team. He was a member of the West Hamlin Methodist Church and the St. Paul Methodist Church in Point Pleasant and a member of the West Hamlin Volunteer Fire Department. Richard served in the United State Army from 1960 to 1963, during the Cuban Crisis. Not only was he an outgoing person who enjoyed sports, especially playing golf, he was also an active member of the Jaycees in Point Pleasant, WV in the 1960's and 1970's. Richard was a member of the Hamlin Lodge No. 79, A.F.& A.M. having been awarded his 50-year pin in the summer of 2019. Richard was a talented wood carver whose carvings reflect his love of mountain heritage. He was also an avid reader who enjoyed World War I and II battles, as well as famous officers from those eras. Richard loved flowers and lawn work, spending many hours working outdoors at his home on Meadowbrook Drive, Point Pleasant, WV.

Richard was retired from Pechiney Rolled Products, formerly Kaiser Aluminum/Ravenswood Aluminum where he worked for thirty-nine years as a millwright and safety liaison. He was a member of the Steelworkers Union, serving as a union representative.

Richard was a loving husband and family man, who was the son of his late parents, William J. B. Mabe and Viola Browning of West Hamlin, WV, as well as the youngest brother to his late brothers W.J.B. Mabe II, of West Hamlin, WV, Samuel Boyd. Mabe of Kernersville, NC, Charlie "John" Mabe of Cincinnati, Ohio, and his only living brother, Jiles P. Mabe of Milton, WV.

He was the loving husband for 60 years to his high school sweetheart and wife Melanie Kerwood Mabe of Point Pleasant and devoted father to his greatest source of pride, his son Bryan K Mabe (Kelli), who resides in Charleston, WV. Richard is also survived by his beloved and beautiful granddaughters Lauren Alexandra Mabe of Charleston, WV, and Elizabeth Morgan Mabe presently of Coeur d'Alene, ID.

He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as by his special nieces, Janet Sumpter of Kenova, WV, Maureen Hoke Hauldren of Hamlin, WV, Caroline Kerwood Pridemore of Point Pleasant, WV, special neighbor and friend, Patricia Huffman, and by former foreign exchange student from Merida Yucatan Mexico, Luis Ruiz Munoz.

A public graveside service, officiated by Rev. Matthew Oliver, will be held at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Huntington, WV on Saturday, November 7th, at 1:00 PM. Please be mindful to social distance.
