Max Arlin Spurlock, 84, of Ashton, WV, passed away November 21, 2020. He was born April 24, 1936 in Cabell County, WV, a son to the late Freddie Spurlock and the late Maude Massie Spurlock. He was a crane operator at INCO Alloys until his retirement. He attended Ashton Baptist Church and pastored several churches over the years. He was also known as the "Phantom Poet" amongst his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Freddie and Maude Spurlock; and brothers, Fred and Darrell Spurlock.

He is survived by his sons, Max (Deborah) Spurlock Jr. of Ashton, WV, and Matthew (Gene) Spurlock of Huntington, WV; daughter, Betsy (Scott) Arthur of Wayne, WV; grandchildren, Ryan (Angela) Rowsey of Barboursville, WV, and Derek (Jessica) Spurlock of Scott Depot, WV; great grandchildren, Haven, Gaige, and Isabella Rowsey, and Madison, Olivia, and Elijah Spurlock; sisters, Violet (Louie) Stephens, and Shirley Ball; and brother, Larry (Glenda) Spurlock; special neighbor, Steven Long; and a host of nieces and nephews, friends, and church family. Special thanks to Steve Ball. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

At Max's request services will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the charity of your choice in his memory. Deal Funeral Home in Point Pleasant is serving the family.
