Christina Samson
(Ballingall) Gillies
Nov 19, 1919 — Jul 23, 2020
Point Pleasant
Christina Samson (Ballingall) Gillies, 100, went home to be with her Lord on July 23, 2020, surrounded by her loving family, while at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH. Born November 19, 1919 in Glasgow, Scotland, she is the daughter of the late William Ballingall and the late Helen McIntyre Ballingall.
By way of Sydney, Australia, Chrissie came to the United States as a young girl. There she met and married her beloved late husband, Robert (Bob) Gillies, and settled in Eskdale, West Virginia where they raised three children of their own as well as two of Chrissie's younger siblings after their parents' untimely passing. Her work ethic was unmatched – in addition to raising five children, she also worked as a retail store clerk for many years and, in later years, enjoyed volunteering at Pleasant Valley Hospital, where she was named PVH Volunteer of the Year in 2015 and Central District Volunteer of the Year in 2016 . In her very rare spare time, she used her exceptional talent for crochet and sewing to bless others with numerous handcrafted gifts and trinkets.
Chrissie was a devoted member of New Hope Bible Baptist Church in Point Pleasant, WV, where she shared her love of God and her special brand of love & care with everyone who came through the door. Chrissie's steadfast faith gives us peace that she is now joyfully reunited with her parents, husband, two brothers, John Ballingall and William Ballingall, sister Helen (Ballingall) Higginson, and lifelong friend, Mary McNeal.
Above all, Chrissie's pride and joy came from cherishing her precious family. Left behind to anxiously await a reunion in Heaven with her one day are one son, Alexander (Rose) Gillies of Point Pleasant, WV; two daughters, Susan (Jerry) Bates of Columbus, OH and Elsie (John) Coleman of Berkeley Springs, WV; one brother, Thomas Ballingall of Philadelphia, PA; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 9 great great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; her best friend, Sue Darst of Point Pleasant, WV; and her fur baby "Missy."
A celebration of Chrissie's life will be held at New Hope Bible Baptist Church, 107 Robinson Street, Point Pleasant, WV on Monday, July 27, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. , with Pastor Melvin Mock officiating. Friends may visit the family at the church from 10-11:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service. A private family burial will be held at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens in Glasgow, WV following the service at the church. Due to the pandemic, face masks are required and social distancing will be observed.
In lieu of flowers donation should be made to New Hope Bible Baptist Church/Gabriel Project or to Riverside Methodist Hospice Services, Columbus, OH.
